18 FOOD & BEVERAGE ASIA AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018 BITING ISSUES Super-Stable Colours for Confectionery Pure Tomato Powder-Derived Ingredient Boosts Skin Health /\FRUHG )UXWDURP Lycored’s carotenoid-derived colours have passed the confectionery test, proving super-stable in both vitamin-enriched gummies and hard-coated candy. Lycored o ̫ ers a range of natural colour solutions for confectionery. Tomat-O-Red TM (pinks to reds) is sourced from lycopene from tomatoes, while Lyc-O-Beta TM (yellows and oranges) is extracted from BetaCarotene. First, researchers set out to test the performance of these carotenoid-derived colours in vitamin-enriched gummies. They carried out accelerated and real- time shelf life stability tests on gummiescolouredwithsixdi ̫ erent Lycored shades, comparing them with samples produced by the same manufacturer but coloured artificially. The Lycored-coloured gummies contained Vitamin C, but the artificially coloured alternatives did not. The natural colours from Lycored all remained true to fruit in their natural colour hues. Their stability was strong under intense light conditions and similar to that of the synthetic colours. This was the case despite the additional stress of Vitamin C content, which disrupts the stability of some colorants. Lycored also investigated the performance of its carotenoid-derived colours during the rigorous hard-coating / panning process in hard-coated confectionery. They were tested in two di ̫ erent coatings for candy ʉ Quick White from Norevo and TitaniumDioxide. The formulations, in shades of red, yellow and orange, were tested for four weeks at temperatures of 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C in clear plastic bags and in a humidity-controlled environment. Lycored’s colors all performed very well, achieving good quality shades in both coatings. In fact, the coating experts noted their user-friendliness compared to other colour sources. Ŷ Frutarom enters the “beauty from within” market with PhytoflORAL ® , a patented clinically studied cosmeceutical for skin lightening and photo protection. It was developed by IBR, Ltd., Israel. Phyto̭ORAL ® is a proprietary ingredient derived from non-GMO tomatoes rich in the colourless carotenoids, phytoene and phyto̭uene. It is available as a free-̭owing, all-natural powder that can be used in multiple applications, including capsules, chewable tablets, drinks and pre-mix sachets. Clinical data show that dietary intake of phytoene and phytofluene results in the accumulation of these phytochemicals in the skin, delivering multiple skin-health and beauty bene̬ts. These include protection against oxidative and photo damage, as well as capabilities to lighten skin and even out complexion. Moreover, these compounds possess inherent anti-ageing properties for skin. In many cultures lighter skin is correlated with luxury and well-being, while even toned skin is universally translated into a healthier and more youthful appearance. “Asia Paci̬c is one of the top markets for skin whitening and lightening ingredients,” explained Ms. Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, Ph.D., VP of Business Development and Marketing for IBR. “Multiple skin health ingredients, especially skin-whitening materials, are unsafe for use. This is why it was vital to develop a safe, research-backed natural ingredient like Phyto̭ORAL ® .” Phyto̭ORAL ® has been subject to a number of clinical and in vitro studies that demonstrate its bioactivity. E ̮ cacy was further elucidated through gene expression analysis. Ŷ
