ON THE TABLE 30 FOOD & BEVERAGE ASIA APRIL / MAY 2019 F rutarom is one of Israel’s biggest success stories as a global flavours and ingredients producer that has seen immense growth over the past two decades. Founded in 1933, the company has been able to stay at the top thanks to its forward- thinking leadership and understanding of up- and-coming ingredient trends in the space. In the following paragraphs, Food and Beverage Asia catches up with Frutarom on its innovation lab as well as newly launched products. Also, having just been acquired by International Flavours & Fragrances (IFF) in a US$7.1 billion dollar deal a fewmonths ago in October, we find out more about how the merger has benefited Frutarom and changed its course. FoodNxt Innovation Lab With innovation being vital to the continual success of companies such as Frutarom, the usual strategy would be to invest further into internal research and development efforts and capacities. While this is what Frutarom is already currently doing, with 92 R&D laboratories worldwide to date, the firm has also gone off the beaten path with its newly opened innovation laboratory to help nurture Israeli-based food-tech start-ups. Last year, after a tender procedure, the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) had selected Frutarom to run a FoodNxt innovation lab for three years. Together, they provide selected start-ups with up to USD$300k (~40k from Frutarom and the rest from IIA) to reach proof of concept. However, to Frutarom, it more than just providing financial support.
